I am honing my storytelling craft after thirty years as an emergency physician, mother, and observer of the human condition. I will be creating new entries and pulling in some of my published works. Thanks for coming along.
After Emergency Medicine…
#119 Spending the Summer with The Guncle
Author Steve Rowley did not ask me to write a blurb. If he did, this would be it:
You can see it coming from a mile away. Grieving kids get thrown together with grieving gay uncle. There will be ice cream, conflict, goofy pool parties, begrudging discovery of love, and painful self-reflection. The fact that Steven Rowley broadcasts the gimmicks of his plot, and pulls it off anyway, is a testament to superior writing and biting humor. You will laugh, you may cry, and you may learn something about heartache and the false promise of isolation. Reading The Guncle is a lovely way to spend a few hours this summer and you just might learn a few bittersweet lessons.
#118 It’s a Good Time to Visit Istanbul
Even with unrest in the world nearby, Istanbul is a great place to visit. The great city landmarks sit within the chaos of one of the world’s great and historic cities. The hospitality and food of the Turkish people are legendary.
#117 Self-Doubt is Normal
Self-doubt is a critical part of the learning experience or young doctors and nurses. It makes us double and triple check, look things up, and ask for help. Self-doubt spurs us to grow.
#116 Looking for the Healing Connection
When one doc read that a healthcare CEO dismissed physicians as the cornerstone of primary care, he went to his computer to refute that notion in this book of narrative-memoir-research and philosophy.
